With his white beard, red hat and pants, Papa Smurf is the leader of the smurfs and quite a wizard too. He was 542 years old last spring. He is a wise old Smurf, who tries as much as he can to stop the Smurfs acting like crude humans.

Everyone in Smurf Village turns to Papa Smurf when things go awry. Papa is always busy making magical spells and potions in his laboratory. His house is a huge laboratory with several chemical devices, where he tries to create potions for the good of the Smurfs. He often saves the Smurfs from danger using his vast knowledge. Sometimes (quite often actually) he gets his potions wrong but he always gets there in the end. If the Smurfs have any questions or problems, Papa Smurf always has the answer. He also possess quite comprehensive diplomatic skills in case they meet humans or other creatures, and usually manages to speak without using the "smurf" word.

The Smurfs (originally Les Schtroumpfs in French) are a fictional group of small sky blue creatures who live somewhere in the forests of medieval Europe. The Belgian cartoonist Peyo introduced Smurfs to the world in a series of comic strips, but most people probably know them best through the animated television series - The Smurfs.

Smurfs are tiny, blue, three-apples tall creatures, who speak a dialect which makes heavy use of the word "smurf". The root word "smurf" is used extensively as a noun, verb, and everything in-between; "what a smurfy smurf, Papa Smurf" would not be an uncommon sentence. There are over 100 Smurfs inside the Smurf Village. Each Smurf is assigned a task in the village, according to their ability and the needs of the community. Smurfs live peaceful lives in harmony with nature.

Gargamel the sorcerer is the sworn enemy of Papa Smurf and the Smurfs. He is an evil wizard (though with very limited powers) whose main goal is to destroy the Smurfs. He is perpetually stooped, his robe is worn and patched, and his teeth are rotten.

He lives in a run-down hovel with his flea-bitten cat Azrael.
